Fair Trade Pricing

Fair Trade pricing is based on international negotiations between farmer groups, importers and roasters through the Fairtrade Labeling Organizations, a nonprofit organization based in Europe. The current prices are $1.26 per pound for chemically grown coffee (that's those other guys) and $1.41 for organics (that's us!).

The conventional market price for coffee (the "C Price") has been somewhere between .30 and .70 for the last three years, so you can see how significant the Fair Trade difference is, especially when the farmer has to back out all harvesting and processing costs from what he or she gets. So the real deal is what the farmer gets to put in his or her pocket after expenses. It looks like this for the following countries:

  C Price Fair Trade
Nicaragua .23 - .55 .78
Ethiopia .18 - .40 .76
Sumatra .25 - .60 .79
Mexico .23 - .45 .76

Take a look at the standard coffee contract we all use, and note the pricing and terms for a Fair Trade purchase. All of our contracts read the same. Each and every pound you buy brings real money and respectful relationships to our southern partners.
