East Timor
Our coffee comes from the mountainous Ermera district, southwest of the capital, Dili. The coffee grows on misty slopes but requires heavy shade to resist the scorching sun of the long dry season. The farmers are organized into 15 rural grower cooperatives, that sell to the national cooperative federation, CCT. The federation processes and sells the coffee to us under Fair Trade terms, resulting in a significantly higher price ending up directly in the hands of the farmers.
The independent coffee farmers of East Timor struggled for years against Indonesian rule, and won their freedom peacefully. During that time, we provided funds for democratic organizing by pro-independence groups. At the farmers' request, we are now funding needed rural health care clinics in the coffee areas, staffed totally by Timorese.
Our Timor beans are Aifu (1000-1400 meters growing altitude) and Maubesse (over 1,400 meters). The hard beans keep their character through the dark roasting process, retaining their spicy, solid taste. We use these beans in our best-selling Marrakesh Express. In decaf we use them for our tasty Liberation! and Ring of Fire.
