Next stop: Georgetown for talk on Social Entrepreneurship

Dean will give a talk entitled How do Entrepreneurs Make Meaningful Change in the world? on Thursday March 13 at 7:30pm at the Mortara Center for International Studies, Georgetown University.  A Coffee and Java Drop tasting will begin 7pm and last throughout the evening.  This event is free and open to the public.  Come intrigued.  Leave wired.

This event is proudly co-sponsored by the Center for Social Justice, Georgetown Entrepreneurial Organization, GU Students for Fair Trade, Kauffman Initiative in Social Entrepreneurship, Mortara Center for International Studies, MSFS Program, and Our Moment.  The GU Bookstore will host a post-talk sale and signing of Dean Cycon’s book:  Javatrekker- Dispatches from the World of Fair Trade Coffee.

A self-described “biting dog on the ankles of Starbucks”, Dean Cycon is considered by the Big Boys of Coffee to be a moral compass of the coffee industry.  “Dean has made Starbucks a better company,” says Sue Mecklenburg, Vice President of Sustainable Procurement Practices at Starbucks Corporation.

“Who would have thought that a cup of coffee contains World Bank Schemes, indigenous rights, third world women’s empowerment and a wide range of globalization issues?” says actress and activist Susan Sarandon.  “Dean Cycon reveals the world within worlds of coffee that make us think about the choices we make at the supermarket or café.”

A Yale educated indigenous and environmental rights lawyer, activist and entrepreneur, Dean runs a certified 100% organic, fair trade and kosher coffee roasting operation in Orange, Massachusetts.  With over thirty years of experience in development work and activism in indigenous communities, Dean created Dean’s Beans to prove that business can promote positive economic, social and environmental change at the third world source, and be profitable at the same time.  Dean is also a co-founder of Coffee Kids (non-profit development group), and of Cooperative Coffees, the world’s first fair trade roaster’s cooperative.

Dean’s Beans has grown steadily over the past fifteen years, staying true to its mission. The company designs and funds people-centered development projects in the coffee lands in partnership with the growers, and returns a percentage of profits to the growers as a Social Equity Premium, giving Deans Beans the distinction of paying farmers more per pound of coffee than any other company in the United States.

Dean’s Beans is the winner of the Best Practices Recognition Award from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s Sustainability Award.  In August, 2004, Dean’s Beans become the first coffee company in America to conduct an independent Fair Trade Audit.  The results and supporting documentation are posted on the company website.

His book JavaTrekker: Dispatches from the World of Fair Trade Coffee is a series of powerful tales about the struggles and triumphs of coffee farmers in a world of globalization and change.  Rigoberta Menu, Nobel Peace Laureate, writes:  "Coffee is more than just a drink. It is about politics, survival, the earth and the lives of indigenous peoples. Dean Cycon has been involved with indigenous rights, in coffee and in the larger sphere, for the twenty-seven years I have known him. He has a rich knowledge of the people and places of coffee, and knows how to tell our stories."

Drink Deep.  Your Coffee will Never Taste the Same.
